Simple stencils were used or sometimes the barrels were branded with an iron. The designs simply reflected the family coat of arms or those of the domain, like the traders’ signs on market stalls.
Both owners and wine merchants were thus able to identify at a glance the terroir and origin of the wine in a particular barrel, allowing them to certify its provenance and thereby facilitate trade.
As glass-makers began to appear in Bordeaux in the middle of the 18th century, the wine trade slowly continued to evolve. Wine bottles appeared, and gradually began to take over.
Whenever possible, wine was bottled at the Château. This trend was to develop throughout the 19th century.
